to ensure your own safety and to prevent possible damage to your OB–4: do not expose OB–4 to rain or moisture. clean with a dry cloth. place OB–4 on a flat and level surface to prevent it from falling.
protect your hearing. be careful when turning up the volume and do not listen too close to the speaker on high volume for a long time.
to prevent malfunction or damage, turn off the power to all devices before connecting OB–4 with other units. OB–4 has a very low idle power consumption. but, if you are not going to use it for a longer period of time we recommend unplugging.

the internal battery already has some charge out of the box, but we recommend 1 to 2 hours of charging the first time you use your OB–4.
to charge, insert the power cord into the inlet in the back. while charging, the line input led will be red. when charging is complete the red led will turn off.
to power on, turn the volume knob clockwise.
check the battery status on the display by tilting OB–4 forwards or backwards.
OB–4 is designed to sound fantastic anywhere.
for the best listening experience in a room; place OB–4 on a table, windowsill or shelf.
if you want to make the bass response richer, place the back panel about 10 cm from a wall or window.
an alternative way of placing OB–4 is tilted, leaning on its handle. this way the top panel is easily accessible and visible.

input. press the input button to select audio source. hold the input button to activate magic functions.
play. in bluetooth mode, press the play button to play / pause / skip / go back. in radio mode, press the play button to search for the next station.
volume. the volume knob controls the volume level of OB–4 and also functions as the power switch. the knob is motorized and will react to adjustments made over bluetooth.
tape. OB–4 records all playback on a virtual 2-hour magic tape.
line input. the line input works with any 3.5 mm line level analog audio devices, such as OP–1, OP–Z or pocket operators.
power inlet. (on back of speaker) 100-240 VAC.
use the input button to select mode.
there are four modes. line-in, bluetooth, FM radio and disk mode.
turn down the volume on OB–4 before connecting line-in.
connect your audio device with a regular 3-pole stereo audio cable. avoid using 2-or 4-pole cables.
note: if the led is blinking red while using line-in, it means that the input signal is clipping. turn down the volume of the source.
a blinking blue led shows OB–4 is ready to be paired. follow the pairing process on your desired device. when connected the led will turn solid blue. as default, OB–4 in simple bluetooth mode allows one active device at a time. if using the orthoplay app you can set it to party mode, which allows multiple connections. read more about party mode here.
press the play button to play. press it again to pause.
double tap to skip track. triple tap to return to the previous track.
rotate the tape dial to rewind and fast forward. tap play to return to realtime. read more about scrub and tape transport here .
press the play button to search for the next available FM radio station. the screen will show the current FM frequency and station name if available.
hold input and tap play to search backwards – down the FM band. for frequency fine tuning, hold play, and when the tape dial stops rotating, use it to manually select a frequency.
rotate the tape dial to rewind and fast forward. this can be useful for rewinding radio if you missed something! tap play to return to realtime. read more about scrub and tape transport here .
this is an experimental mode with a collection of functons to help you relax.
press and hold play to switch between different functions.
1. ambient. ambient turns any audio source into a relaxing soundscape. when ambient is starting use the tape dial to set an optional sleep timer. after a few seconds, use the tape dial to tweak the sound engine. hold input and use the tape dial to adjust the mix. to switch source used for ambient, press and hold input. pro-tip: you can directly enable ambient by holding play on any input (line-in, bt, radio). hold input + play to disable. watch more here
2. karma. use OB–4 as a mantra box. light some incense and tap play to skip to the next mantra. watch more here . note: in OB–4 Off-White™, karma has been replaced with the gyil music of sk kakraba. let the traditional music of west africa fill your consciousness.
3. metronome. use the tape dial to change tempo. the display shows beats per minute. tap play to skip to the next sound set. pro-tip: for 808 metronome, hold input and use the tape dial to adjust the pitch. hold input and play to adjust the decay. watch more here
4. noise. this turns OB–4 into a calming noise wave generator. use it to sharpen your focus. when noise is starting use the tape dial to set an optional sleep timer. after a few seconds, use the tape dial to tweak the noise. to simulate waves crashing against a shore, turn the tape dial to set how strong the waves should be. hold input while turning the tape dial to adjust the time between the waves. tap play to change between white, pink and brown noise.
5. loop. this is where you access your previously saved loops. tap play to choose loop. hold input and turn the volume dial to divide the loop length. if you haven't saved any loops yet the display will read 'no loops saved'. read more about looping here .
hold the input button as a shift key to enable magic functions.
the best way to understand these functions is to play around with them!
scrub back and forth using the tape dial. the tape will keep recording in the background as you scrub.
the display arrow shows that you are using the tape.
press the play button to return to realtime. scrub works for the line in, bluetooth and radio modes.
hold input and use the volume knob to rewind or slow down playback. release input button while using the tape transport to lock playback to the new speed.
hold the input button to use the volume knob as a tape transport. turn the volume knob back and forth to change speed and to far left to rewind and far right to fast forward. release input button while using the tape transport to lock playback to the new speed.
hold input to go back to normal speed. the display will show +1.0x.
press play to return to realtime. the tape always keeps recording for two hours.
press and hold the input and play buttons to record a loop. the loop starts when you hold both buttons and ends when you release them. watch more here
when in loop mode, you can hold input and use the volume knob to divide or multiply the loop length. the display shows the loop length.
when in loop mode, hold play and use the volume knob to slide the loop position back and forth along the tape. sliding is tempo locked. the display shows the position of the loop.
press play to exit the loop. press the play button again to skip to realtime. looping works for line in, bluetooth and radio modes.
to adjust the speed of your loop, press and hold both the input and play buttons and adjust speed using the volume knob.
to save your active loop to disk, press and hold both the input and play buttons buttons, until the display says 'save'.
select disk mode and choose the loop function to access all your saved loops. read more here .
OB–4 analyses the musical content of whatever you are listening to in real time and automatically detects the beats.
this is called beat match and can assist you when creating loops. beat match is turned on by default.
this setting is sticky and can be switched on and off by quickly tapping input and play while a loop is active.
the text 'auto' or 'raw' in the display indicates if beat match is on or off.
OB–4 has an integrated antenna, built into the handle.
in some places you will get a better signal if you use the extended antenna.
tighten the loop end of the antenna around the handle knob. the left-hand side of OB–4 usually works best, but try a few different positions to see what works best in your environment. keep the antenna away from metal objects and wiring.
once you've found a good position, find a place to hang the antenna using the integrated hanger. the antenna usually works best if it is fully extended away from OB–4.
for listening on the go, the curly section of the antenna fits into the handle. grab the rubber stoppers, stretch the antenna to fit and insert the stoppers into the handle.
orthoplay is the software designed to control and configure OB–4 and OD–11. use orthoplay to remotely control OB–4, update the speaker OS and more. when using the app, make sure bluetooth is enabled, and that your device is connected to the same wifi network as your speakers.

adjust volume use the large dial to adjust the volume up or down. note the volume knob on OB–4 adjusting accordingly.
change color tap the color dots to reveal the available colors to choose from for the volume dial.
play / pause tap here to play and pause your music for the modes that support it.
change mode tapping here allows you to change input modes:
backward / forward tap here to skip back and forward in your songs over bluetooth, or scan the FM band up or down.
list and rename speakers swipe left or right to select your active speaker and tap on it configure it. tap the name below the speaker and enter the name you want to use for it. this will also update the name you see over bluetooth.
add a new speaker tap the + sign and choose which type of speaker you want to connect to. then follow the on-screen instructions to add it.
locate speaker tap here to play a knock knock sound from your speaker, handy when trying to locate a specific unit.
battery status this shows the battery status of the active unit.
more options tap the more options icon to reveal additional settings.
bluetooth auto-switch with bluetooth auto-switch enabled, OB–4 will automatically switch source to bluetooth when there is audio on bluetooth from a connected device.
bluetooth mode in simple bluetooth mode, OB–4 allows one active device at a time. in party mode, two connections can be active at a time. if one of the devices starts playing, the other will be paused.
serial number this shows the unique serial number of the unit.
software version this displays the currently installed speaker software.
update if an update is available, tap here to update the speaker.
register tap here to register your speaker.
select bluetooth mode to pair with your ortho remote. a flashing blue led shows OB–4 is ready to connect.
once connected the led will turn solid blue.
