videolab is a set of tools for unity, the world's leading real-time graphics engine. unity is used for everything from games to art installations to automotive interior design. due to it's gentle learning curve and supreme extensibility, unity is the perfect match for videolab.
unity is equally fluent in 2d and 3d, there are so much you can do – be it a flexible playback engine for motion-captured animations, a testbed for advanced physics simulation or a shader workshop for blazing fast fractal pattern generation.
at the heart of videolab is a visual scripting tool that lets you design complex behaviours by patching wires between boxes. not only is this a great way to program, and an easy way in for newcomers - it allows you to bundle up your work in portable videopaks that can be loaded on ios.

meet keijiro takahashi
teenage engineering have worked closely with keijiro takahashi and the unity tokyo studio to fully integrate OP–Z with the unity game engine. as keijiro-san is both a full time software evangelist at unity and a renowned VJ at night, we have had access to
a selection of keijiro-san's personally
developed tools and shaders which deliver stunning 3D graphics that run at full speed on iphone or ipad. keijiro-san's tool-set and real life experience in performances with motion graphics have been invaluable in making OP–Z
an inspiring live tool for moving images in sync with music.
the weakest point of VJ-ing has always been the creation of content. by exposing the inner control data of the OP–Z and linking it to unity, users can create anything within unity, build the project and just drop it in the app. customizing every single polygon in a performance.
z-land by eran hilleli
eran hilleli is an animation director & artist currently living and working in tel aviv. he teaches animation at bezalel academy of art & design in jerusalem. he is also one of the early adopters of videolab, and has helped us steer the development in the right direction.
fascinated by simple shapes and worlds that don't exist, eran is usually drawn to experiences that allows plenty of room for interpretation. his work opens the door to faraway lands and mysterious characters inspired by folk tales, japanese animation from the 80s, and early video game aesthetics.
z-land ep1 is erans first videopak.
join the fellowship while it marches through various lands, run wildly through the woods with the sphere dog or try to lead the confused and hungover giant to whatever it is he's looking for. make some tunes and jump into eran hilleli’s first episode of z-land available now in the OP-Z app.
is a small intimate music
and art festival held annually outside of stockholm, sweden. the perfect place for us to experiment live with the OP-Z. together with aspiring architect elis butler we built a square box that fitted a smaller crowd.
inside we placed a custom made table with built in projectors and a smoke machine. the graphics projected onto the ceiling of the room reacts to the musical notes played
on the OP-Z during the performance.
the different tracks affect individual
graphical elements, creating an intimate connection between what what the audience see and what they hear. musical and visual performance were made by jonas åberg, esther lennstrand, pontus winnberg, tobias von hofsten, NSDOS & ultra satan.
OP–Z is an advanced fully portable
16-track sequencer and synthesizer from teenage engineering. it lets you control your entire live set – music, visuals and lighting – from a pocket sized, battery powered device.
anything you dream up in videolab can be used with the OP–Z. just export a videopak and drop it in the OP–Z app. you can load as many as you like and jump between them using the keys on the OP–Z.
this means you can prepare your live visuals in the comfort of your home studio, but you only need to bring your OP–Z to the venue. plug your ios device into the projector and see the big picture.
